CAPITOL CORNER

LMTA's Legislative Overview with Executive Director Renee Amar

Members,

Major thanks to Todd Hine with Hine Environmental for testifying in committee this week. Him and several other truckers took a day away from their business to be your voice at the capitol.

Next, if you know Representative Jay Galle, Rep John Illg and Rep Dennis Bamburg, please make sure to thank them! Thank them for being courageous and standing strong this week in committee. They are my legislative heroes this week.

This legislative session has started with a mixed bag for the LMTA, with significant progress made in the House Civil Law committee, where several key reform bills passed in our favor. However, we also faced setbacks with unfavorable bills advancing in the House Insurance committee. This is all a part of the Governor’s “balanced approach” which concerns me deeply. It's evident that the playing field is currently heavily skewed towards the trial bar, which continues to exploit truckers and exacerbate the insurance crisis. We are dealing with highly manipulative players in the system, so we must be on guard at all times.

Our state cannot afford to drive more insurance companies away with heavy regulations as I testified to in committee. A bill passed out of committee this week that places the power to dictate price setting for insurance companies with the Commissioner of Insurance. This is really just a political game that is being played and what angers me most, is that the truckers will have to pay for those games! The Commissioner won’t have the opportunity to approve or disprove prices because this type of policy will just result in more insurance companies fleeing the state. I expect these types of policies out of a state like California, but to have a bill like this coming out of Louisiana, a supposedly ruby red state, stuns me. And furthermore, the bill is authored by a trial lawyer. The House members need to stop this bill.

We must be vigilant this session. We will continue to call for reforms targeting trial lawyers, including stricter advertising regulations, greater transparency, damage caps, "no pay, no play" policy and barring those who are responsible for a wreck from recovering from your policy. But we also must hold our political leaders accountable and that includes the governor.

We're committed to fighting for accountability in this system, no matter who is on the other side. Thank you for your continued dedication to our cause.

Thanks,

C.Renee Amar

2025 Trucking Day at the Capitol

The Louisiana Loggers Association and Louisiana Motor Transport Association invite you to join us on April 28 for Trucking Day at the Capitol, an essential event dedicated to advocating for the future of the trucking industry.

This is your opportunity to engage directly with lawmakers, discuss the challenges facing our industry, and promote solutions that will drive trucking, logging, and transportation forward across Louisiana. Your voice is critical in shaping policies that impact our businesses, our workforce, and our economy.

The day begins with a networking lunch at 11:45 featuring a statewide elected official, setting the stage for meaningful discussions. From there, we’ll walk to the state capitol to attend a key legislative hearing, where participants will gain firsthand insight into the legislative process and effective advocacy strategies.

In the afternoon, we’ll strategize next steps, ensuring our message is strong, unified, and impactful. The event will conclude with a high-stakes advocacy meeting, providing one last opportunity to reinforce our priorities with decision-makers.
