Renee Amar on Moon Griffon Show: Leadership Must Act on Insurance Crisis
LMTA Executive Director Renee Amar joined Moon Griffon to highlight the lack of hearings on bills addressing Louisiana’s commercial auto insurance crisis. Without hearings, these bills cannot move forward, leaving trucking companies and small businesses to absorb rising, unsustainable costs. Leadership must act and allow these bills to be heard.

This week at the Capitol:
On Monday, we headed to House Transportation Committee for a hearing on:
- HB 746 by Rep. Chuck Owen regarding local permits for heavy loads. The amendments we proposed to the bill were not ready, so we deferred the bill for a week after hearing testimony from Jake Minner of Bengal Transportation and Toni McAllister of Louisiana Loggers. The bill is scheduled for discussion on Monday, so we expect to get it out of committee then.
On Tuesday, a bill by Sen Luneau:
- SB 223, an LAJ (Louisiana Association of Justice bill) to expand punitive damages for truckers was scheduled in Senate Judiciary C but ended up being deferred another week. We oppose this bill no matter the form it is presented and will fight it the whole way through. It will be scheduled next week in Judiciary C and we will be there to oppose it in committee.
On Wednesday, the Senate Transportation Committee heard several relatively non-controversial bills that cleaned up language in the code from past revisions or needed updated language.
Then we headed over to the Senate Labor Committee to hear some important bills.
- SB 162 by Sen. Seabaugh would expedite workers' compensation medical treatment appeals and was reported with amendments.
- SB 382 by Sen. Seabaugh repeals the Workers' Compensation Advisory Council and was reported favorably.
Thursday was largely spent reviewing bills for our Legislative Committee meeting. Then we headed over to the Capitol to support:
- HB 185 by Rep. Melerine, which addresses a Supreme Court decision on employer liability in workers' compensation cases concerning independent contractors. The bill was reported favorably out of committee, so will head to the House floor.
