LMTA Recognizes Legislators with Inaugural Road Warrior Awards

The Louisiana Motor Transport Association (LMTA) presented its first annual Road Warrior Awards Monday evening in Shreveport, La. This year’s winners include Rep. Michael Melerine (District 6) and Sen. Alan Seabaugh (District 31), both representing the Shreveport area. The award aims to highlight lawmakers who demonstrate exemplary commitment and leadership in their respective legislative bodies, focusing on issues facing the state’s trucking industry.

Renee Amar, Executive Director of the LMTA said, “Rep. Melerine and Sen. Seabaugh have both worked tirelessly this year to help level the playing field for truckers in the legal arena. Whether it be the state House of Representatives or the Senate, our industry had a strong advocate in their corner with these two men.”

The 2024 Road Warrior Awards were presented at the Margaritaville Resort in Bossier City, Monday August 19 at 5:00 pm as part of a reception honoring local lawmakers.

LMTA AT THE LEGISLATURE: Fact Checking Legislators

LET THE RECORD REFLECT THESE FACTS! Earlier this month at the capital, Executive Director Renee Amar answered lawmakers' questions regarding the trucking industry. A few of these "facts" seemed a little off to us, so we've done our research to set the record straight.

The LMTA will continue to work to ensure that our lawmakers have accurate information on the trucking industry so they can make informed decisions.

New Beneficial Ownership Information Reporting Rule Information

The new Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) reporting requirements, mandated by the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) in the United States, require certain entities to disclose information about their beneficial owners to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).

The purpose of these requirements is to combat money laundering, tax evasion, and other illicit activities by increasing transparency around who owns and controls companies. Beneficial owners are generally individuals who own or control at least 25% of an entity, or who exercise substantial control over it.

The rule applies to corporations, limited liability companies (LLCs), and other similar entities formed in or registered to do business in the U.S., with certain exemptions like large operating companies and regulated entities. Reports must include detailed information about the beneficial owners, such as names, addresses, and identification numbers.

Non-compliance with these requirements can lead to significant penalties, including fines and potential criminal charges. The new regulations are part of broader efforts to improve corporate transparency and curb illegal financial activities.

ATRI Seeks Motor Carrier and Freight Broker Input on Industry's Cargo Theft Crisis

As part of its priority research on the growing problem of cargo theft, the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) is asking motor carriers and brokers to participate in a new data collection initiative.

Cargo theft – which has evolved from thieves simply stealing cargo to sophisticated impersonation schemes – is becoming more common according to some industry stakeholders. In March 2024 ATRI’s Research Advisory Committee (RAC), citing FBI statistics that indicate $15 to $30 billion is lost to cargo theft annually, voted to prioritize research on the topic.

While the problem of cargo theft is growing, many industry stakeholders are hesitant to publicly provide cargo theft data. ATRI’s survey is designed to confidentially and anonymously collect accurate loss data as well as identify successful counter-strategies used by both motor carriers and freight brokers.

“Cargo theft is a pervasive issue that won’t go away without a collaborative effort,” said Ben Banks, Vice President of TCW. “With accurate cargo theft data, our industry will be able to quantify the issue, and work more effectively with law enforcement and commercial insurance to combat this costly problem.”

Motor carriers and brokers are encouraged to complete the survey by clicking here.
