Updates from Louisiana's Transportation Industry!

Guest Column: Renee Amar - Modern credentialing system would benefit security, economy.

Background checks serve a noble purpose. They ensure that bad actors cannot access secure facilities, sensitive information or high-risk materials.

But what security value is gained by requiring individuals to undergo the same background check multiple times? For decades, truck drivers who have passed a background check to operate at ports and maritime facilities have had to undergo the same background check again to be eligible to haul hazardous materials.

This redundancy does not enhance our national security. In fact, it does the opposite. The siloed system for issuing these credentials is expensive and inefficient.

Adding insult to the injury to our national security, the truckers who are required to hold these credentials are forced to foot the bill. Louisianans in the trucking industry and other essential members of our supply chain deserve a federal credentialing process that respects their time and money.

Fortunately, it appears that this absurd credentialing system will begin to change this week. That is because Congress looks to be on the verge of passing the Transportation Security Screening Modernization Act, a bill co-authored by Congressman Garret Graves. It is expected to be signed into law.

Laplace, LA W/B Scales Preparing to Open - Jan 6

The LMTA Foundation wanted to share these important updates from the Louisiana DOTD Police regarding the LaPlace Scale (I-10):

Scale Opening Details

  • The Laplace Westbound scale is set to open on January 6th, 2024.
  • A message board has been placed at mile post 209, approximately two miles from the scale, to announce the reopening.
    • This board will be set up soon to begin an educational period. On January 6th, the message will change to direct drivers to follow signs to the scale.
  • No bypass enforcement will occur immediately after opening to allow drivers time to adjust.

WIM and Eastbound Platform Status

  • The Westbound scale will be operational starting January 6th.
  • The Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) systems and the Eastbound platform require significant upgrades and are scheduled for this fiscal year as high-priority projects.

Signage and Management

  • Due to the absence of PrePass and Drivewyze systems, we will manually call in trucks using updated signage that reads, "ENTER WHEN FLASHING."
  • A small team will be onsite during the initial phase to limit truck volume, showcase the scale's functionality, and continue driver education.
