MORE INFORMATION

Gov. Edwards Vetoes SB 196

On June 15, 2023 Gov. John Bel Edwards vetoed SB 196, a litigation disclosure bill. We wanted to share Gov. Edwards’ comments, with the original letter viewable here.

While we are not surprised by this action, we are disappointed that the Litigation Financing Disclosure and Security Protection Act will not be enacted in 2023. We do not intend to back down on this issue, and we will be able to reintroduce this legislation in 2024 with a new Governor and, hopefully, additional support from the legislature.

Louisiana OMV Experiences Large Data Breach

Officials believe all with LA state-issued licenses, IDs or registrations had info compromised.

Recently the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness shared the news that a massive data breach to the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles third party MOVEit software.

During a recent news briefing, officials noted that at this time, they believe “all Louisianans with a state-issued driver’s license, ID or car registrations likely had data compromised.” At this time, the LMTA is under the assumption that it includes CDLs. Until informed otherwise, we advise our members and the industry to take the same precautions outlined by the Governor’s Office.

Information that was breached include names, addresses, social security numbers, birthdates, height, eye color, driver's license numbers, vehicle registration and handicap placard information.

Officials are urging driver's license holders to take the following steps to safeguard their identity.

  1. Prevent unauthorized new account activity and monitor credit
  2. Change all your passwords
  3. Protect your tax refund, returns with the Internal Revenue Service
  4. Check your Social Security benefits

Below are additional resources and information on the breach:

FEEDBACK NEEDED: National Trucking Safety Spend Survey

ATA is recruiting motor carriers of all types and sizes to participate in its latest Safety Spend Survey!

Last conducted in 2015, the survey will be used to estimate annual industry spending on safety and provide a benchmarking resource for carriers of all sizes to measure their safety expenditure against.

This short survey examines carrier spending on mandatory and discretionary safety expenditures including: safety compliance, maintenance, on-board safety technology, driver safety training and driver safety pay. Survey participants will receive an executive one-pager detailing the results of the study.

If you are interested in participating, please go to www.trucking.org/safety-spend-survey, download the survey, complete and return it to lbur@trucking.org by July 7, 2023.

Optional: Carriers also have the option to sign a non-disclosure agreement if they so choose. Please download, sign, and return the NDA from the website above with your completed survey. All data will be held in the strictest of confidence and no individual company data will be released. Only industry aggregate data will be reported.

If you have any questions or would like more information about the survey and participation, please contact lbur@trucking.org.

FEEDBACK NEEDED: Statewide ITS Architecture Updates - Freight Needs

WEATHER - National Weather Service: Excessive Heat Warning & Severe Weather Possible

Here is an update from our partners at the New Orleans and Baton Rouge NWS.

Main Takeaways:

  • Friday - Heat Warning | Dangerous heat indicies are possible today, reaching above 108 to even 110 or greater, especially across southeastern Louisiana this afternoon. The dangerous heat will continue into the upcoming weekend, which is stressed for those with upcoming outdoor plans. Remember to limit our time outdoors, take plenty of breaks in the shade, stay hydrated by drinking water, wear sunscreen, and do NOT leave people or pets in vehicles.
  • Friday - Severe Weather |  A few scattered strong to locally severe storms will be possible today, mainly in the afternoon and evening hours. Be sure to have a reliable way to receive warnings should they become required later today.
