Election Reminder
May 16 Election | Polls Open at 7:00 am Saturday

Louisiana’s May 16 election is this Saturday, with polls opening at 7:00am and closing at 8:00pm.

This election includes several important statewide races and constitutional amendments that could have long-term impacts on Louisiana’s business climate, legal environment, and economy.

Of particular importance to Louisiana’s trucking industry is the race for the Louisiana Supreme Court. TruckPAC, the Louisiana Motor Transport Association’s political action committee, has endorsed Judge William “Billy” Burris for the 1st District Seat of the Louisiana Supreme Court.

The 1st District of the Louisiana Supreme Court covers Livingston, Washington, Tangipahoa, St. Tammany, and St. Bernard parishes, along with a small portion of Orleans Parish

For Louisiana’s trucking industry, Supreme Court decisions carry real and immediate consequences. Court rulings can directly impact liability exposure, insurance costs, business operations, and the overall legal climate in our state.

TruckPAC supports Judge Burris because of his commitment to interpreting the law as written and applying the law fairly and consistently.

More details and polling information are available at the Louisiana Secretary of State’s website: https://www.sos.la.gov/ElectionsAndVoting/GetElectionInformation/Pages/default.aspx

In addition to the Supreme Court race, voters across the state will also consider several constitutional amendments. For members looking for a nonpartisan overview of the proposed amendments, PAR Louisiana has published a helpful voter guide here:

Please also be aware of several important election changes and updates:

  • Closed-party primaries are now in effect for certain races, including U.S. Senate, Louisiana Supreme Court, Public Service Commission, BESE, and U.S. House races.
  • Unlike Louisiana’s traditional “jungle primary” system, voters will now primarily vote within their registered political party for these offices.
  • Voters registered as “No Party” may choose which party primary to participate in at the polls, but must remain with that party through any runoff election associated with that race.
  • Additional information on Louisiana’s new closed-party primary system, from our friends at PAR Louisiana can be found here:

Additionally, Louisiana’s U.S. House races have been suspended following recent federal court action regarding congressional district maps. All other races and elections will proceed as scheduled, though any votes cast in U.S. House races will not be counted.
